Kohzan Takai (1806-1883)
A wealthy farmer from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era
He studied Nukina Kaioku for calligraphy, father and son Kishi Ganku for
painting,
Seigan Yanagawa for poetry, and Issai Sato for Confucianism in Kyoto.
He sponsored Katsushika Hokusai in his later years and learned painting
from him.
Of particular note as Kouzan's work are a number of Japanese youkai (ghost)
paintings
that were greatly influenced by Hokusai in his later years.
