Japanese artist. Born in Nishihonmachi, Kasaoka, Okayama Prefecture in 1889. He studied under Takeuchi Seiho and was given the pen name "Chikkyo." In 1909 (Meiji 42), at Seiho's recommendation, he enrolled in Kyoto Municipal College of Painting as one of its first class of students, along with Tsuchida Bakusen, a student at the same school. Having been baptized by Seiho's innovative approach to painting, Chikukyo was later influenced by modern Western painters such as Paul Cézanne, and the Southern School painters such as Tomioka Tessai, and developed a style characterized by bold brushstrokes and vivid colors. |
